Senior Mandy Dunlap will be awarded Outstanding NJROTC Cadet on May 16 by the Louisville Armed Forces Committee. This award is awarded to those cadets who have exceptional leadership, commitment, and skill.

“I was really surprised, and it means a lot to me to get the Outstanding NJROTC Cadet award,” said Dunlap.

The procedure in order to pick the outstanding cadet analyzed cadets on their skills, mental ability, and leadership.

“To win this award, I was chosen by my instructors to write an essay on leadership qualities,” said Dunlap. “NJROTC has prepared me on how to be a successful leader, to be committed, and how to work together, along with many other skills. The leadership qualities that I have learned and wrote about were leading by the Navy’s core values of courage, honor, and commitment.”

Dunlap plans on using her NJROTC skills by continuing her career in the national defense field. She hopes to enlist in the Navy.

“After graduation, I am continuing in the field of national defense by serving in the U.S. Navy; I enlisted as an Aircrewman,” said Dunlap. “I believe that as a citizen I should help protect my country, and I chose the Navy because I like the Navy way of life and the opportunity to travel the world.”

Dunlap has been a member of FC’s NJROTC for four years. She said she is glad that her hard work is finally paying off.

“This wraps up my four years in NJROTC,” said Dunlap, “how I have grown as a person, and how I have been blessed for the things I have accomplished.”

Senior week offers fun times for graduating class

By Rachel Lamb

With roughly one month of high school left, seniors were congratulated through senior week. This gave the graduating class a week break from school lunch and invited them to the gym for music, catered food, and fun.

“My favorite part of senior week is only sitting around seniors at lunch. It is nothing like in the school cafeteria,” said senior Claire Watkins.

Other seniors, such as Katrina Klingsmith, favor it due to convenience of the food.

“It is nice to sleep in and not have to worry about packing my lunch in the morning, since I normally bring it everyday.”

Even though there are still many celebratory events left, senior week can be an emotional time.

“I feel the end is coming. I’m going to miss all of my friends so much,” said senior Alec Chait.

He added that this time of year is very stressful and senoritis is slowly beginning to sneak in.

Senior Shaw Ray has a different opinion on how senior week makes him feel.

“This event gives me a hint that we’re almost done with high school, but not to give up yet, we’re not completely done.”

Ray also shared that he thinks seniors are offered a big opportunity.

“It’s a good way to be able to talk to other seniors about your plans for after high school, since you do not really get to see your classmates as much as you think.”

Another senior, Timon Stermer, agreed with Ray.

“I rarely see my classmates during the school day. Senior week is probably one of the few occasions that I see a lot of them at once.”

Many seniors feel that this point in the year is a good time to slow down and focus on the present.

“I’m enjoying what is left of the year and I want to spend the time we have left making memories that I’ll never forgot,” said Klingsmith.

New prom venue stirs excitement

By Bailey Hussung

Though prom and its preparations seem far off, both the Junior Executive Committee and student body are already thinking about it. As one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, prom is always a hot topic. This year has brought some exciting changes, including the announcement that prom will be held at the Seelbach Hotel on Louisville’s Fourth Street.

The Junior Executive Committee’s prime responsibility is to plan the prom, so it was their decision to hold prom at the Seelbach. “Since FC has had prom at the Marriott for the past two years, we thought we should find a place that FC has never had it before,” said Junior Executive  Scarlett Hartlage.

Hartlage said the committee got together at the beginning of the summer, and they knew right away they wanted to change the venue. “We looked at the Mellwood Center, the Marriott, and the Belle of Louisville. We felt the Seelbach was the best because it was a new venue that none of the FC students have had prom at, and it gives the juniors and seniors an opportunity to make new memories in a historical building,” said Hartlage.

The Seelbach is indeed a historical landmark, as many celebrities have chosen to stay at the hotel. Former president John F. Kennedy, American gangster Al Capone, and pop icon Elton John are just a few notable people to have roamed the halls. F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby, even based the location of the wedding of two main characters off of the Seelbach Hotel.

Junior Executive Mariah Ferber said that the Seelbach offered both a larger ballroom and a dance floor than the Marriott, which was definitely a large factor in choosing a venue. “We rented the biggest ballroom they had, and we’re expecting a big turnout this year. We made sure there was enough space for everyone,” said Ferber.

Though the location was chosen for some practical reasons, it also stood out for its beauty and charm.“The Seelbach is a very elegant place overall, it has a beautiful marble grand staircase entrance, all the decor is just really pretty,” said Ferber. Some of the Junior Executives toured the spot were impressed by everything they saw, Ferber said.

When the news that the venues had changed came up at class orientations, it spread across the junior and senior classes like wildfire. “I am super excited to see the inside of the Seelbach, and how they decorate it for our prom. I think it will make it more memorable because the hotel is a part of history,” said junior Mallory Grantz.

Seniors who attended prom last year are looking forward to the change of scenery.“I liked the Marriott, but I think the Seelbach is a lot nicer,” said senior Cole Thorton.  Thorton said as long as there is music and decorations, it will be a great night.

Even with a location that is impressive on its own, the Junior Executives plan to do everything in their power make this year’s prom a night to remember. “I believe that the change of venue for this year’s prom will allow students to differentiate this prom from all previous and future proms. The Junior Executive Committee simply hopes to make prom the best it can be, and an awesome experience for the students,” said Ferber.

Turkey Bowl rivalry intensifies

By Evan Spears, Maddie Miyahara, Hannah Cheetham and Danielle Rehor

From practices cancelled for thunder and storms, to FC practices cancelled due to the heat index, the Turkey Bowl stakes are higher than ever before. The seniors want this bad, there are only four teams in FC history to ever win both their games. The juniors want to beat the seniors to make good on their promises of superior athleticism and fighting spirit.
