Students, teachers prepare for upcoming AP exams

By Sydney Sears and Delaney Smith

As the year is coming to a close the stakes rise. AP exams begin next week and many students begin to feel stressed around this time of year. Preparation is a significant part in passing these important tests.

According to counselor Mark Clark, the AP exams are graded on a five-point scale with “5” being the highest and “1” being the lowest. If a “3” or higher is scored a student can receive three credits to any college in Indiana.

To earn these credits students typically must put forth a lot of hard work and dedication. Many teachers have been doing in-class work and before or after-school study sessions to help prepare their students to the best of their ability.

“I plan to go to the cram session. I’ve also been looking over my notes,” said Junior Bailey Smit,h who is preparing for Monday’s AP psychology exam.

Senior Scott Schuchardt has been taking a lot of time to prepare for his AP government  exam by going over old AP Government College Board tests and the writing prompts for them. He has also been going to Suzanne Moss’s after-school study sessions.

Teachers have also been working to prepare their students for the upcoming exams.

“In class I have covered all the main units, done weekend review sessions, and have given handouts and charts in class over major concepts. I have also given bell ringer questions from old AP tests to try to prepare my students,” said AP psychology teacher Chad Clunie.

Students have high hopes for their scores on these tests.

“I hope I do well on the test because if I don’t do well my mom is making me pay for the test,” said Smith.

Upcoming events arouse excitement in the Senior Class

By Delaney Smith and Rachel Lamb

As the school year is starting to come to a close, annual events for seniors are coming up quickly. Some upcoming events are:

May 1- Senior Class Day 8:30 a.m. : Day in which seniors are honored with awards, not including scholarships. “My favorite senior event is senior day, because we get to dress up,” said senior Alex Kennedy.

May 12-16 Senior Week : Week of events for seniors, such as Baccalaureate and Senior Class Night. Special lunches from outside venders are also brought in. “Senior Week is my favorite week of the year, since I don’t have to eat the school food,” said senior Ashley Apple.

May 12- Baccalaureate 7 p.m. : An end of the year ceremony that honors seniors. “We have have the choir perform and an inspirational speaker that gives them a look back and a look forward into the future. It can be emotional, since it is the last time they are together, except graduation,” said principal Janie Whaley.

May  14- Senior Class Night 7 p.m. : Night in which seniors are honored with scholarships. ” I am enlisted in the marines and not going to college right away, so this event will not affect me as much as others,” said senior Alyson Gill.

May 17- Prom 7 p.m. : School dance for juniors and seniors only. “I am most looking forward to prom considering it is my senior year,” said senior Scott Schuchardt.

June 8- Graduation Commencement Ceremony 2 p.m. : Ceremony where graduates are given diplomas, class president and faculty speak. “Saying goodbye to all the friends that I have made over the years is going to be tough,” said senior Timon Stermer.

Prayer group brings students together

By Sydney Sears and Rachel Lamb

Early every Tuesday morning a small group of students meets with Highland Hills Middle School teacher April Elmore to gather in prayer.

“Prayer can change the climate of the school,” said Elmore.

Elmore started this group last year after a couple of girls in her small group at Northside Christian Church wanted to begin a prayer group at their school. Elmore took the initiative to create this group so that students can grow closer to God in high school and help prepare their faith for college.

“The prayer group is just a few high school kids that come to school early before school on Tuesdays and pray. It exists to be a time for students to simply read a few verses of the Bible and pray for what they feel like,” said junior Reagan Kurk.

Reagan is one of the girls in Elmore’s church small group.

The group meets every Tuesday morning at about 7:05 a.m. outside the athletic office. During this time they talk about life, complete a devotional, and then finally finish with prayer. This all ends at about 7:30 a.m., giving students enough time to prepare for their first class.

Senior Scott Schuchartdt shares how he has personally benefitted from the prayer group.

“You get to connect with others that share the same faith that you do and realize that you are not alone.”

Reagan and Schuchartdt agreed that this group creates a positive influence in your life.

“Allowing students the opportunity to meet, encourage one another, and pray together is a wonderful thing,” said Reagan.

“You are able to grow your faith so that you can impact the school in a positive way through prayer and fellow devotions,” said Schuchartdt.

Some students that attend this group like Schuchartdt said they not only grow closer with one another but God as well.

“This group helps brighten my day and opens my eyes to what He has done around me,” said freshman Elise Kurk.
