KFC Yum! Center offers popular concert lineup

By Lexi Burch

As the year 2013 kicks off with a bang, so do the sounds from inside the KFC Yum! Center. Even though it is only March,  the Yum! Center has brought in and will bring in music’s top names for their concert lineup.

The KFC Yum! Center, the home basketball court of the Louisville Cardinals, also hosts some of the largest concerts in Kentucky and Indiana. With seating for up to 22,000 people it is a key place for music stars to come and share their music. Junior Courtney Crombie said it is an awesome place to hold concerts.

“It’s so huge, the large space allows artists to do awesome things,” said Crombie.

Less than a week ago the Yum! Center hosted punk rock singer P!nk.

“My favorite part of the concert was when she was flying around the arena doing her acrobatic stuff,” said Crombie.

The concert line ups doesn’t stop at P!nk, artists like Luke Bryan, Kid Rock, Zac Brown Band, and The Who have all paid a visit to the Yum! Center.

“I’ve been to a couple concerts there,” said sophomore Natalie Graham. “The Yum! Center never fails to book awesome artists.”

In less than a month, country star Jason Aldean will take the stage and senior Alex Beyer said he is very excited.

“I am most excited to go see him live,” said Beyer. “It’s so much different to see an artist live.”

In addition to country stars like Jason Aldean, the Yum! Center will welcome one of country music’s biggest star. 21-year-old Taylor Swift will make her appearance May 10. This will be Swift’s third time in Louisville and second time at the Yum! Center.

“I was so excited [to get Swift tickets] because I have been to all of her concerts in Louisville and I know she always puts on an amazing show,” said junior Alex Kennedy.

It seems as if the Yum! Center’s line-up would slow down after Swift but if anything it gets better. Later in the year they will host Bruno Mars, One Direction, Bon Jovi, and Fleetwood Mac. This year’s line up will be every concert-goers dream, full of ultimate concert experiences.

“My favorite thing about concerts is because of how loud it is and how many people are there,” said Kennedy. “It’s like a giant party.”

N.O.T.E: Fleet Foxes, Rihanna

By JT Samart

Music is an ever-changing art, and what will become popular in the future might be completely different to what we listen to now. The possible combinations of notes are almost infinite and the growing amount of possibilities with different instruments is mind-blowing. So to celebrate these musical resonances is the biweekly N.O.T.E.

N.O.T.E is an acronym which is stands for N: New and Popular, O: Old, T: Try it, and E: Enough.

New and Popular will cover current popular hits or your radio hit. Old will cover the popular songs of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Try it is a section dedicated to an obscure or “indie” artist. Enough is a about the song we have all heard and just been sick of. It is the song you hear too often and it just gets annoying. I will ask one student or staff member their “Enough” song and let them share their opinion.

New and Popular:

This week’s billboard chart topper is Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out Of Heaven”. Mars has been on the appearing on the charts since his break out hits “Just The Way You Are” on his first album Doo-Wops & Hooligans.  Now with this new album, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” Mars has brought another well done album with a more refined, atmospheric songs. “Locked out of Heaven” has a very familiar upbeat, bass-heavy sound that now has become ubiquitous with Mars’ non-ballad songs. The guitar and drums remind the listener of  The Police  and compliments Mars’ rhythmic voice. The reverberated echoes and voices add an interesting dynamic to the song.

Old:

From December 4, 1954 to January 21 of 1955: This number one hit was by a quartet by the name of The Chordettes and their song “Mr. Sandman.” “Mr. Sandman” has a skillfully done introduction with a “bum” coming from every single member to give a very capsulating sound. The tone is very nostalgic and very 1950’s.

“Fleet Foxes”

Genre: Indie Folk

Label: Sub Pop records

Albums: Fleet foxesSun Giant (EP), Helplessness Blues

Website: fleetfoxes.com

One band that embodies indie folk is the Fleet Foxes. The Seattle- based band provides very deep lyrics with a chorus of voices and “these broad and open questions” as Robin Pecknold, lead singer and guitar player, put it in at 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival interview. All of their songs embrace an echoey feel and tend to have multiple parts. Their technique is extreme diverse each song has different instruments or different uses throughout each of their albums. My personal favorite song is “He Doesn’t Know Why” from their first album, Fleet Foxes, because of the expert lyricism, and its ability to pick me up when I am down.

Enough:

Rihanna disappoints in her hit single “Diamonds”. It has something about the tone of her voice and the repetitive nature of the lyrics. The instrumentation is uninspiring and really does not have anything extremely dynamic maybe except the brief breakdown. At least it was a change of pace.

That is all for this N.O.T.E. Join us next time to see what four Liverpool boys wanted to hold. Also, we will also try some indie psychedelic rock that has possibly the strangest music videos in the world.

Pop Rocks! : 2012 Grammy Predictions

By Jared Murray

This year’s Best Pop Solo Performance category is more of a dumping ground for the most popular songs of the year rather than a heated race between the actual best pop songs of the year. Songs nominated in the category include: “Someone Like You” by Adele, “Yoü And I” by Lady Gaga, “Grenade” by Bruno Mars, “Firework” by Katy Perry and “F***in’ Perfect” by P!nk.

British singer Adele has had a record breaking year, both in album sales and chart performance. Her plaintive second single “Someone Like You” garnered her much critical acclaim and commercial success thanks to her large fan base of forlorn teenage girls. Her simple yet emotive performance definitely makes her a contender for the award.

Lady Gaga’s “Yoü And I” finds the pop star in her natural habitat: heartbroken and playing the piano. While that combination may boring to some, the result is truly a genuine sounding pop song from a woman known for being anything but. Featuring some top-notch belting from Gaga, and honky-tonk vibe along with an impressive guitar solo from Queen’s Brian May, “Yoü And I” is not a song to underestimate or sing along with quietly.

Another song about love, “Grenade” by the smooth singing Bruno Mars is the only song sung by a male to be nominated in this category this year. The synth-driven song finds Bruno trying to make his lover feel bad for their lack of dedication in the relationship. Despite the excellent vocals and an irresistible chorus, “Grenade” is unlikely to be a serious contender for the coveted gramophone.

Whether you like it or not, Katy Perry had a stellar year. Her self-empowerment single “Firework” is a delectable slice of dancepop that had everyone singing their heads off. Sadly, even the song’s catchy beat could not save itself from some questionable lyrics (plastic bags, really?) and Katy’s near-yelling vocals in the chorus. Hopefully her nomination was not meant to be serious, especially when looking at many better pop songs having come out last year.

Following the trend of self-love anthems seen this year, P!nk’s “F***kin’ Perfect” is a fun and energetic song from one of pop music’s veterans. Clearly written for her fans, the sometimes electropop song doesn’t have many distinct characteristics to set itself apart from everything else on the radio today, making it an extremely unlikely winner.

My predictions:

Who Will Win: “Someone Like You” by Adele

Who Should Win: “Someone Like You” by Adele

Dark Horse: “Yoü And I” by Lady Gaga
