Boys basketball players preview upcoming season with their new coach

By Sydney Sears and Delaney Smith

As the boys basketball players trudge out of another practice their sore muscles let them know they have given the day their all.

With a new coach and fresh faces, FC awaits the upcoming season.  The players have a new mindset and are more determined than ever to have a successful season. The boys are adjusting to a new schedule, workout program, and coach in this upcoming season.

“I like what Coach Lieberman has come in and started doing. It’s really affected the team by all of us being in much better shape than we were before, and it’s helping us improve as athletes,” said senior Zane Nichols.

Coach Mark Lieberman has instilled a novice practice and workout schedule for the players. They practice every day of the week except Sunday. Lieberman said that the new workouts have resulted in improved strength throughout the entire team.

“He has us on a conditioning program that we can almost be positive no one else is doing,” said junior Brandon Smith.

Lieberman expressed his ideas on improvement and working hard. He said that he believes that they can outwork any team they will play this season. Lieberman shared that the team will work hard, compete, and find ways to outwork their opponents this season.

“I’m always looking for gradual improvement,” he said.

With all this hard work, team members are excited to see what will happen on the court.

“I’m just excited for the upcoming season to start. I want to know where all of this hard work that we’ve been putting in is going to get us,” said Nichols.

Though Lieberman cannot predict an outcome for the season, he promised hard work and dedication.

“We will play hard. I do know that,” he said.

The varsity team’s first official game of the season is at home against New Albany at 7:30 on Friday, Dec. 13.

The sound of squeaky shoes cling to the floor,  as a young new team comes together to represent FC basketball.

Returning junior Zane Nichols said he is very excited for a new season and all the opportunities it brings.

“I am the most excited for the New Albany game because it is the biggest rival game of the year.”

This year’s team has a lot of young new players one of which is junior Chad Zoll.

“This is my first year on Floyd’s team,” said Zoll. “I’m both nervous and excited for this season.”

Nichols said the team is working hard to rebuild from the loss of the previous year’s seniors.

“We’re focusing on what our team’s strengths are so we can take advantage of them each game,” said Nichols.

The team is excited to work hard to represent the school and give fans something good to see out on the court.

“I can’t wait to bond and become close with this year’s team,” said Nichols. “It’s going to be a great season.”

Seniors commemorate four years of wide-spread talent

Tuesday night at the boys’ basketball game against Brownstown Central, the cheerleaders, Dazzlers, pep band, and boys’ basketball team celebrated Senior Night. Between players, parents, and coaches, there was a mixture of feelings.
For cheerleading coach Ashley Nevin, the last home game with the seniors was an emotional night.
“This last home game is bittersweet. I’m excited for the girls and the things they have to come but I am also going to miss them,” said Nevin.
Although the cheerleading team will be losing three seniors this year, Nevin sees it as an opportunity for the younger team members.
“There are always voids to fill every year when your lose seniors, but I’m also excited to see some of the underclassmen have their chance to step up as leaders,” said Nevin.
For other teams, the void will be a tough one to fill. Dazzler coach Todd Sharp recalls his time with his group of girls.
“This year’s senior class was I think the closest group of girls I have ever had. These are girls that if it wasn’t for the team, I don’t think would have ever become friends and I have been able to watch them grow together throughout the years. They are all strong leaders and they compliment each other well,” said Sharp.
As senior basketball player Quinton Miller thinks about his time at FC, he said he will definitely miss practice the most.
“I’m feeling depression and sadness. And happiness and excitement,” said Miller.
For senior Jenna Bain, the last home game of the season reminds her of what she loves most about being a Dazzler.
“Being on this team has helped me push myself to the limit and continue to become a better dancer.”
