By Ashton Beck and Maddie Miyahara
On May 29, at 6:30 p.m. the Highlander baseball team competed in the first round of the 4A division in the Hoosier Hills Conference sectionals against The Seymour Owls at Mount Tabor fields.
The Highlanders kicked off the game with 11 runs in the first inning, not allowing the Owls to make a run until the third. Entering the fourth inning, Highlanders made two more runs and Owls made on to increase the score 14-3. Due to being 10 runs ahead of Seymour, they ended the game after the 5th inning with the final score being 14-3 in the first round of sectionals.
Junior Colton Kimm said he felt good after the first game.

“We hit the ball very well and pitched really well,” said Kimm.

The next round of sectionals began May 31, at 3 p.m. against the Jeffersonville Red Devils. Unlike the first game, the Highlanders were not making runs in the first inning. By the fourth inning, Highlanders trailed 4-0. The first run for the Highlanders was by junior Austin Newell in the seventh inning making the final score 4-1.
Newell said this season went well but had a disappointing ending and the team will be coming prepared for next season.

“We are going to be on a mission and nobody is going to be in our way,” said Newell.

For senior Ross Lundy, this was his final game.

“Obviously we would have liked to advance further in the state tournament, but we met a lot of our goals,” said Lundy.

Highlander head coach Casey LaDuke said it was tough losing to Jeffersonville two years in a row in sectionals.

“No matter how hard you work, no matter how many wins, there isn’t any guarantee. It hurts right now, but we’ll get over it,” said LaDuke.

Brother and sister unite in public athletics

When walking into a building for learning and receiving an education, students also come to participate in public school athletics.

Previous homeschooler junior Grant Vellinger arrived to FC, and it was the first time being a full time student in a public school.

“I was homeschooled for nine years. My first year at a public school was my freshman year at Floyd,” said Vellinger.  Along with Vellinger, his sister, sophomore Paige Vellinger also came to FC as a freshman for the same reason.

Grant involves himself in more than one sport.

“I played soccer and ran track my freshman year. Sophomore year I ran cross country and track and I’m doing the same thing this year,” said Grant.  Paige ended up doing the same as Grant.

Before FC, Grant was able to be a part of athletics.

“I played club soccer for Javanon which is a club in Louisville. That was pretty much year round,” said Grant.

Paige also participated in soccer before FC.

“I first played soccer for Graceland Baptist Church until I was in sixth grade then I played with Southern Indiana United,” said Paige.  She also ran on a home schooled cross country team.

Grant enjoys school sports over club.

“Club sports are much more serious. I don’t think club sports are as fun as school sports and mainly because I wasn’t very good friends with the guys on my club team. The guys on the cross country team are like my brothers,” said Grant.

With their athletics being a big priority, Grant’s top priority is his academics.

“My academics come before everything else at FC,” said Grant.

With all the accomplishments Paige and Grant have made at a public school, they have made their mom proud.

“I am very proud of them. I think that public athletics taught them many good life skills like a good work ethic,” said mom Erin Vellinger.
