Spirit Week: Favorite movie character

By Lexi Burch and Christian Dimartino

As Spirit Week continues and students keep showing their school spirit today, Wednesday, Sept. 19, or Favorite Movie Character Day. The halls are filled with interesting characters and the classrooms are filled with excitement.

“I am really glad that everyone is having fun with the days,” said junior Hannah Powell.

Powell, a varsity cheerleader, said the cheerleaders work really hard on picking spirt days that people will enjoy.

“We really want to make sure that everyone can get involve, whether you are a freshman or a senior or a student or a teacher,” said Powell

As the rest of the week continues, Powell said that the cheerleaders hope that students stay involved in the themes and come ready to cheer at the pep rally this Friday.

The best Spirit Day in my opinion is Favorite Movie Character Day, because I want to see how far people go with it. So, to get in the spirit of things during Spirit Week, here are the top five best movie characters.

5. Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) in Juno – Who would’ve thought that a comedy about a pregnant teenager could work so well? Well, here is the reason why: the title character. Page’s Oscar-nominated performance as the sarcastic lead brought the movie together. She is hilarious, and nearly every line that she says is perfect. This role made me an Ellen Page fan.

4. Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy  – Yeah, he is kind of a big deal. Stupid and undeniably childish, Ron Burgundy is the definition of a great character. Ferrell’s performance as the most popular anchorman in San Diego is his best. Whether he is fighting his love interest Veronica, or talking to his beloved dog Baxter, or throwing a burrito out of a car window, Ron Burgundy is legendary.

3. Megan (Melissa McCarthy) in Bridesmaids – The very first scene that Megan enters Bridesmaids, she tells about how she fell off of a cruise and a dolphin spoke to her, spiritually, and saved her life. From that scene alone, I knew that this character was going to become popular. In an Oscar-nominated role, McCarthy is funniest actress in the whole movie. When the other bridesmaids discuss all of these nice ideas for a bachelorette party, she comes up with a female fight club. It is those moments that make her stand out the most. Like Zach Galifianakis in The Hangover, she stole the show. There hasn’t been a funnier character in years.

2. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) in Raiders of the Lost Ark (and three other adventures) – It’s difficult finding an action hero as cool as Indiana Jones. Like James Bond, he is suave, smart, and knows what he is doing right on the spot. Jones makes Ford’s other classic character, Han Solo look amatuer. He’s pretty great.

1. The Joker (Heath Ledger) in The Dark Knight – Is it weird that my favorite movie character is a murdering psychopath who kills everyone who stands in his way? Maybe, but no one can deny the Joker’s unmatched evil charisma. The Joker might be inherently nasty, but never has a movie brought a villain more likable, funny, and clever. The late Ledger’s Oscar-Winning performance was astonishing. His performance is part of what makes The Dark Knight one of my favorite movies of all time.

T-shirt campaign escalates school spirit

By Michael Pepin

The multicolored hoard of FC fans scream out “‘Merica!” as their team scores yet another touchdown against Madison High School.  “Green, gold, and white is the new red, white, and blue.”  The t-shirt was designed by a group of students, a product of the FC business class.

Each week, the students come up with a unique t-shirt design to sell for that Friday’s football game. “My students learn about the market process of designing shirts that people are willing to buy, doing some research into what people are willing to do, and working under a time frame,” said business teacher Chris Street.  Each shirt carries a theme that also serves to stoke the fires of the school spirit and give the students a chance to show their creativity in the real world.

Street and his class come up with the ideas by brainstorming, then collaborating with cheerleaders and the administration. “We talk with the cheerleaders and several ideas are worked out, and then take the one that wins to get it approved by the administration.  We want to be fun, but also respectful,” said Street.

The Providence’s “Four years, four wins” slogan, as well as “‘Merica!” and this Friday’s blackout themed Jeffersonville High School game were all ideas that they created using this process.  Out of all the shirts, the Providence’s theme shirt sold the best. The profits the t-shirts earn help fund the Highlander Outfitters store.

The class has students thinking seriously about life beyond high school. “For my future, I need to learn how the business world works, and I really like Mr. Street,” said senior Sarah Engle.  She said that she also uses the class to stay involved in the school.

This strategy is also helping students who take the class learn more about the business world. “My parents own a business, and one day I’m probably going to take it over, so I wanted to learn the ins and outs of it,” said junior Isaac Nasseem.

Selling t-shirts is not the only lesson the students learn in class, they also learn about real world businesses and how they operate.  The t-shirt campaign is a project by Street as a method of teaching the experience of running a business first-hand.

“You get to learn every aspect of running and maintaining a business. It’s a fun class because it’s hands-on and you learn valuable lessons you can take with you anywhere,” said Street.

Healthy substitutes prove beneficial

By Blake Dykes

Diets are typically not the easiest thing to follow, or the most fun things in the world. However, there are still ways to sneak in the healthy food and cut out some of the junk without going on a strict diet of salad and fruit. There is a method: substitutions.  Consider substituting different ingredients and snacks with some healthier food choices.

One dairy product that seems to be smothered and snuck into every food is butter. There is actually another item that can be used instead and have some benefits for your health: extra virgin olive oil.  This can be used to spread on bread, potatoes, rice, and even used in baked goods. Olive oil helps lower cholesterol, protection against heart disease, and has higher levels of higher antioxidant compounds.

An ingredient that is behind the disease diabetes is sugar. Of course, sugar is well loved and consumed by the majority of America, although it is not the healthiest. A possible substitute for sugar is honey. Not only is honey just as sweet, but it also boosts endurance and the immune system. It can also prevent tumors and helps with digestion.

Everyone loves some chips and queso every now and then; however, queso has no health benefits and is extremely high in fat. On the other handsalsa is a lot lower in calories and helps prevent heart disease and prostate cancer. In addition to these pros of salsa, you are also getting a serving of fruit and vegetables. Next time you’re sitting in a Mexican restaurant you love, pass on the queso and just stick with the free salsa instead.

When it comes to cooking, sour cream is pretty common in recipes. Sour cream does not have any nutritional value whatsoever. On the other hand, Greek yogurt can be substituted for sour cream in any recipe. Greek yogurt  has an abundant amount of calcium and helps build strong teeth and bones. Not to mention that is it significantly lower in fat, and brings a great texture to the food.

Most people love their late night or after school snacks: chips. Who wouldn’t love that crunchy salty goodness? Unfortunately, chips have a great amount of saturated fats. I’m just stating the obvious, right? Well, there is another food that you can indulge in without feeling guilty after: popcorn. Now, of course if it is smothered in that butter we talked about it becomes unhealthy, but just a little bit of salt or olive oil can be sprinkled over it to result in a great taste. Popcorn is a better alternative than chips because it is not fried; therefore, it is lower in fat, it is also high in fiber and antioxidants.

This doesn’t have to be some “diet” where the first time you see cake break into a cold sweat and cave into its deliciousness. Really, this doesn’t have to be considered a diet at all. All this is are some healthy methods to cut back on the amount of calories you consume and create a more nutritional variety of foods.

Dazzlers already preparing for nationals in the spring

By Sidney Reynolds

Yells of encouragement ring throughout the gym as the Dazzlers start practicing their routine.

“We go over our routine a lot and I ask my teammates to watch. If they see something is wrong, they tell me how I can correct it,” said sophomore Kayleigh Brewer.

At practice it is common for the Dazzlers to support each other not only to make adancer better  but also to make the entire team stronger. To have a strong team everyone on it must be supportive of each other. It helps make the performance better and more enjoyable for the entire team.

For the Dazzlers, dancing helps them in more ways than just getting fit and having a hobby. “Dazzling is more than just dance. It teaches you life lessons. Also, you make friends you can hangout with outside of practice,” said senior Brooke Lentz.

The Dazzlers have been working hard to make sure their routine is perfect this year for nationals in  February. They have a year round season with practices four times a week for two and half hours long.

“Practices are long and hard but are completely 100 percent worth it at the end of the day,” said sophomore Coral Portman.

Nationals are their biggest competition and is held in Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The Dazzlers will be there foran entire week. That is much longer than their normal competitions, which generally last around six hours.

“This early in the seasonwe are looking good, but we have to work todo before nationalsin February,” said Lentz.

The Dazzlers have won in Orlando from 2003 to 2012. Last year they doubled titled in varsity pom and hip- hop at nationals.

“I don’t go into the season expecting to win nationals because I don’t want the girls to just think they will win every year. I want them to go into the season giving a 100 percent plus an extra 20 percent to be better then last year,” said coach Todd Sharp.

This year the team is training to have an 11th consecutive win.We had done what present Dazzlers, past Dazzlers, and Todd had pushed us for, our 10th consecutivewin in varsity pom,” said senior Regan Wimsatt.

They still have a while until nationals, but they will train for it at practices and performing at football games.  They also have many competitions between now and then they use to prepare for nationals. Their next performance is during halftime at the home game tonight.

“I can’t image dancing for anyone else because when we go to a competition I see the ways the other teams look at us and I am so proud to be a Floyd Central Dazzler,” said Portman.
