Columnist anticipates this year’s fall fashion trends

By Bryce Romig

As the years go on, fashion changes rapidly throughout the different seasons. The runways are filled with new looks and designers change their designs. The trends are never the same as the previous year, and it is sometimes easy to fall behind. Autumn is one of the fashion industry’s most popular seasons since people buy new clothes for the colder weather, and switch to less colorful clothes, instead of bright ones people wear during summer.

This season be sure to look forward to seeing many “warm” colors such as darker browns and reds mixed with pastel colors such as pink and white. This look portrays a classy but comfortable look that does not have any extremely tight clothes involved. Many of the clothes and colors almost have a 70s feel to them, but with some floral patterns and eye catching jewelry, this look can be modernized in no time.

When looking for pants ditch the blue jeans and go for a bright pastel skirt. This gives off a classier vibe, and looks nicer when mixed with a seasonal colored shirt. Stick with bright but faded pastel colors that help complete the look. If you are more of a jeans person, try floral patterned leggings  or dark brown leggings and wear them with a seasonal colored shirt.  Pair them with a plain shirt to create a modern, sleek look.

When hunting for shirts and sweaters, think vintage. Try a pastel sweater that is loose fitting around the body. Make sure the sweater is not baggy, but loose enough that it does not cling to the body and create an “oversized” look.  Many of these items can be found at a local thrift store, and who does not love a little thrift store shopping?

When searching for shirts, try to find bright or seasonal colored shirt. Think simple and lightweight such as a black or beige colored topLight Blouses are also in style, and look great when mixed with dark colored leggings. Off the shoulder tops are all the rage now, so do not be afraid to bare a little skin, even if that means being cold walking to and from school.  You can also wear a light pink neck scarf or dark brown scarf with any of these clothes, as these help the look pop.

Wear jewelry that is somewhat gaudy or shiny. Try shiny silver bangles or rustic looking bracelets. Avoid any bracelets with charms or neon colors, as jewelry can really make or break the look.

Keep your makeup natural and minimal. Don’t use any abnormal or neon colors, and try to look as makeup free as possible. If you insist on wearing makeup, try a little winged eyeliner and light blush. Be sure to stay away from any dark red blushes, and try light pink.

For the guys, stick to loose cotton pants and plain seasonal colored sweaters.  Think buttons and vintage style clothes.  Do not be afraid to throw on a dark brown scarf to help complete the look.  Pea coats are also a hot item this year, but can be very costly. Hit up the nearest thrift stores and search for a slightly worn one.

Spring brings in new fashion trends

By Allison Werner

With spring coming up, old and new trends will start to arise. In the fashion world, they are first showcased by designers putting together a fashion show. Then, people start to take notice of them. The people who decide to wear the latest trends take the designer look, tweak it a bit, and make it their own. With that being said, it is time to ditch those wool sweaters and heavy coats and dive into the bright spring season.

First up is my favorite category to discuss: makeup and beauty. One product to definitely try out would have to be BB creams. First introduced in Asia, this cream is a five-in-one product that hydrates, primes, perfects, controls oil, and protects skin. This is perfect for those mornings when putting on primer, foundation, concealer, and powder seems like a hassle and leaves the skin feeling cakey.

Another trend in the beauty world is hair painting. No, not actually taking a paintbrush and painting your hair. That would be a disaster. Hair painting, among the other trends, has to be the boldest. It is a mousse formula that when applied, creates vibrant highlights in your hair. It is a cheap alternative to getting it done at the salon. Plus, it is a reasonable price. Another added bonus: if the color looks awful in your hair or is just way too dark, it washes out within in one shampoo.

The next category is the most obvious: fashion. Designers put together a fashion show each year showing off the next big trends. One trend that is popular among the runways is the clean cut look. Whether it is a white dress, pearls, or a white blazer, elegance is in. Pair that with pastel colors and you have a recipe for success.

While elegance is in, do not be surprised to see bright, floral patterns. Whether it be on a dress, a skirt, or a shirt, floral is also in. Introduced in 2011, color blocking was the biggest craze. Now prints are being thrown into the mix. While print blocking is not completely out of season, it is more common in shoes now then clothes.

The last category for spring is nails. Boring one color nails do not cut it anymore. With Sally Hansen nail strips, colorful, pattered nails have never been so easy. Just peel off the back, stick them on nails, and ta-da. Now the hassles of waiting for the polish to dry and the stress of messing up the nails are gone. These strips will definitely strike up a conversation.

From makeup to fashion, there can be trends in just about anything. While some might be bolder than others, except to see them in the coming weeks. Do not be surprised if while walking to class, someone goes down the hallway with a floral dress and streaks in their hair. As the saying goes, expect the unexpected.

Columnist’s music inspires clothing choices

By Paige Thompson

By Summer Haynes

Some people pair music with moods.  Some pair clothes with events.  But I like to pair music with clothes, letting the music inspire some of the outfits that I wear.  Though music and clothes may not be closely related, they can inspire each other on days when picking out an outfit seems like a drag.  Put that iPod on shuffle and check out my music inspired outfits:

1) “White Winter Hymnal” – Fleet Foxes

The outfit that I would pair with this song would be full of denim.  Denim shorts or jeans with a button up shirt made of a denim material, a solid pastel, or a pastel checkered print.  For shoes I would wear oxfords or any kind of Ked-inspired sneaker.  Even a great pair of sandals would work.  A cardigan can also be added or a sweater over the button up shirt for those colder months that are quickly approaching.  For accessories, a fake pair of glasses (or a real pair if you wear glasses) and a few simple bracelets.

2) “Set You Free” – The Black Keys

This song would inspire a “night out” outfit.  Pair dark skinny jeans with a leather jacket, wearing a plain white v-neck t-shirt or flannel button up underneath the jacket.  For shoes, wear boots, or a pair of black oxford heels.  For accessories, I would keep it simple with a ring, or some bangles.

3) “Cosmic Love” – Florence & The Machine

This would be the outfit to wear when feeling extra girly.  Wear a floral dress, or a meshy flowing top with skinny jeans and flats.  Another option would be a bigger, lose sweater and a solid colored pleated skirt.  Wear this outfit with minimal jewelry, wearing only a watch or simple charm bracelet and small stud earrings.

4) “The Wolves (Act 1 & 2)” – Bon Iver

This song inspires my favorite look for the colder months, and it is all about comfort.  I would wear a comfy pair of jeans with a v-neck shirt under a big, cozy sweater.  Accessories are not needed with this outfit, but possible options are: small stud earrings, or a simple bracelet or necklace.  For shoes I would wear converse, a pair of boots, or flats.

This time of year is the best time for layering outfits and trying new trends.  It is certainly my favorite time of year to play up my wardrobe and there is no better way for me to do so than by getting inspired by some of my favorite music early in the morning.

Freshman Mikaela Click uses fun florals and cozy cardigans to show her style.

“I like to wear warm colors, but I go by whatever it is like outside,” said Click.

Click says that she effortlessly puts her outfits together in the morning, choosing whatever looks cute in the morning.

“I like to not worry about where I get my clothes. Basically, you don’t have to shop at designer boutiques to get a one-of-a-kind look. If I like something at Goodwill, I’ll get it. The store shouldn’t hold you back if you like it,” said Click.

Click tries to stand out amongst her peers, not worrying about having a designer label or 100 dollar shoes.
