‘The Summoning’ entices fans of the supernatural

By Lauren Holstner

Readers who like supernatural stories then should read The Summoning by Kelly Armstrong. It is an amazing book that will make them thirst for more.

Have you ever wanted to have supernatural powers? Well, meet Chloe Sanders. She once had a normal life, until she could see dead people and they saw her. It all started on one nice afternoon. She went to school, and she was taken out on a stretcher, screaming.

A ghost had attacked her, but no one would believe her, so she ended up in the Lyle House, a place for troubled teens with mental problems. With medication, a new friend, and the kind nurses she should be able to stop seeing the ghosts. Well, maybe.

As her life at the hated Lyle House goes on she discovers many things that could happen, and all the Lyle House skeletons may just be her downfall. As her stay continues she discovers the mysteries that surround the place and its horrifying secrets, along with the secrets of her fellow supernatural house guests.

From things being not what they seem to extreme problems that will have you wanting more, this book is a great read. With page-turning events in almost every chapter, I love how this book keeps the reader guessing and wishing for more. I was not able to put it down until I finished it and now I cannot wait to read the rest of the series, which consists of five books.

Love ghosts? Love werewolves? Love sorcerers? Then this is the book for you.

American classic makes transition to silver screen once again

By Alyssa Book

From Photobucket.com
The Great Gatsby is the tale of lovers destined to be together, but meant to be apart.
The novel follows Nick Carraway, the honest and tolerant man from the Midwest trying his luck in the bond business in the East. Nick moves to the West Egg, right across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan.

Nick moves in next to a glorious Gothic mansion belonging to the young millionaire Jay Gatsby. Through whispers and rumors, Nick is soon to find Gatsby’s lavish party lifestyle is not all about sex and alcohol, like most things were in the 1920’s.

Gatsby, as you come to find, is in pursuit of the American dream. A part of that dream is getting the attention of Daisy Buchanan. Why is Daisy so important? She is Gatsby’s one true love. They embarked on a passionate romance before he went to war, and although Daisy is now married, Gatsby cannot let go of the sweet memories he has with her.

From this point in the novel, the real drama begins. With cheating, lying, and deceit spreading more quickly through the novel than the rumors of how Gatsby’s earned his fortune, the reader frantically flips through the pages totally engrossed in the story of young lovers trying to rekindle a flame lit long ago.

I absolutely loved the story and after reading it I understood why this novel has been acclaimed as an American classic. This love story is the first of its nature, and is the inspiration behind some the major romance novels and movies today. Fitzgerald’s novel opened the door for authors today to have the ideas of girls caught between two lovers.

The novel has been interpreted to film several times. Each film just never met the credibility or reputation of the novel that has been set through generations of praise from readers. On Dec. 25, 2012, Baz Luhrmann will be  adapting the film to feature talent such as Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film casting was very competitive and the role for Daisy Buchanan was a hot ticket on the Hollywood audition scene. Blake Lively, Keira Knightly, and Natalie Portman all took a shot for the role before Mulligan stole the show and ultimately landed the part.

I am expecting this star studded film to be the most successful adaptions of the novel. Luhrmann was the director of films such as Australia, Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge. This film will surely uphold his reputations that the other films established: having a passionate romance story line with drama and suspense intertwining to create a great movie, one that I think could be worthy of awards.

I would suggest all genders of all ages to read The Great Gatsby. I enjoyed the suspense and deep themes running through the novel. American dreams, 1920 parties, and social classes defining integrity all help the reader realize that love can drive people to do unimaginable things.

I expect the movie to exceed the book, because with an all-star cast including America’s heartthrob DiCaprio, the movie should be a sophisticated interpretation of a classic novel. Filming began in September in Australia, but until Dec.25, 2012, we will have to sit back and anxiously await to see DiCaprio as the the mysterious Gatsby in theaters. In the meantime, this is a great time to read the acclaimed novel and fall into the romance of The Great Gatsby.

Hoban’s ‘Willow’ cuts to the chase

By Lauren Holstner

“It’s hard to keep a secret when it’s written all over your body.”

This quote lives on the cover of Willow by Julia Hoban. It adds suspense and makes you want to read it. Willow by Hoban is a dark and serious book with a hint of romance and humor.  It is about a girl named Willow who believes she is a murderer and killed her parents.

She can no longer go back to her home and lives with her brother, his wife and their child.  She is also a cutter.  This has caused her to lead a secret life no one knows about, until he comes along.  He is Guy, who finds out about Willow’s cutting and turns her world upside down by trying to save her from cutting and making her fall in love with him.
Readers who like stories where nothing seems to go right with a hint of romance and a pinch of pain will enjoy this novel.
Willow lives in a world of pain and sorrow that many readers might relate to. Those who do not connect may see what friends could be going through because we never know everything and this book just shows how little we know about each other.
This story helps readers view the world in an entirely new perspective, often overlooked.  Willow could relate to a number of lives and show us how some people live.

Willow helps us learn things readers never thought we would.  Willow is a great story for readers wanting to experience something new and realistic, and sometimes horrifyingly real.

Meeting with the half angels

By Lauren Holstner
The City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare is the fourth book in The Mortal Instruments series.  This story has plot twists at every corner and is full of action. The first three are filled with action, terror, and surprises.
This story is filled with werewolves, demons, fairies, vampires, shadow hunters, and much more. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves fantasy, action, suspense, and everything vampire.
For everyone who does not like destroyed legends with senseless plot twists, this is a good read, there are no sparkly vampires and no ridiculous contradictions such as vampires going to school in the middle of the day or fey that are not cruel.

The two main characters, Jace and Clary, are always causing trouble and are nothing like you would think. Jace is still a gorgeous boy who is strong and is never afraid. Clary is a marvelous artist, and a shadow hunter who is always doing something wrong, with a lot of personality.

This book can be enjoyed by people who like fairy tales. It has romance, fights, and a lot more.  Readers will also fall in love with Jace, one of the main characters, who never shows fear and is acclaimed as hotter then Edward and Jacob.  Clare’s writing is flavor filled with plenty of action and details which moves the story along at a great pace.  Readers never know what will happen next.

This series spent six months on the New York Times bestseller list, USA Today bestseller, Wall Street Journal bestseller, and Publishers Weekly bestseller.

“The Mortal Instruments series is a story world that I love to live in.  Beautiful,” said author of Twilight, Stephenie Meyer.  This is a perfect story for any fantasy story fans, it includes many fairy tale creatures, plenty of action, and something is always happening.  It is the ultimate fantasy story with plenty of action, blood chilling events, many fairytale creatures, and a pinch of romance.
