FC alumni board gives back to the community

One of the three major Alumni Board events of the year is coming up quickly. It is the annual Alumni Tailgating Event. It takes place on Friday, Sep. 13 at the football game. The Alumni board will be in a large tent, located beside the bleachers. Here, food and games will be offered to past Alumni graduates, and currently enrolled students.  They also offer a place for all FC graduates to meet up and reminisce about their high school careers.

“It’s a good place to see old friends, and eat good food from several vendors.When students graduate this let’s them keep in touch with the school ,” said Alumni Board Secretary Vicki Snow-Hayes.

Athletic Director Jeff Cerqueira explained the reasoning behind this event.

[Our goal] is to rekindle that excitement they used to have,”

 The Alumni Board is especially excited about the new scholarship program.

“We started last year with two scholarships, to qualify you need a 3.0 GPA or higher, you must be an active community helper, and the son or daughter of a FC alumni,” said Hayes.

Last year  one scholarship was given each to a boy and girl, worth 500 dollars.

The original purpose for the tailgate was to show off FC talent.

“We made alumni night to honor a certain group, this year it is the tennis team. We are honoring the boys tennis team, and last year’s state runner-up girl’s Tennis team,” said Hayes.

This is just one of three major events the Alumni board has each year. The other two, being the newly minted Winter Basketball Alumni night, and their biggest event of the year, the Hall of Fame Banquet.

“Our biggest annual event is the Hall of Fame banquet, in the spring, and we pick four or five people to add to the wall of fame,” said Hayes.

Cerqueira explained that most of the money is made at the Hall of Fame banquet through the silent auction and community sponsors.

The alumni board’s purpose  is to bring the school, and its graduates together in order to benefit the community.

“The fact that they are giving back to the community is what I’m most proud of,” said Alumni Board Officer Kristi Lomond. “We are just trying to set up a connection between students and alumni.”

Hayes had one last thing to say.

“Once you go to college you will understand what a wonderful school this is.”

Boys’ tennis defeats rival Jeff to win regionals

On Wednesday the boys’ tennis team defeated Jeffersonville with it all coming down to one set.

The entire match was close with the score going back and forth the whole time.

First, senior Alex Martin was defeated by no. 1 singles Jordy Rigsby 6-2, 6-1.

Just after the team was feeling slightly defeated our no. 1 doubles team senior Drew Hussung and junior Jack Stoner swept Jeff players Chase Kayrouz and Justin Padgett. This brought the match to a tie of 1-1.

Junior Ryan Plunkett, no. 3 singles beat Brock Winchell 6-3, 6-3, giving the team a lead.

When they were starting to feel more confident, senior Codie Endris and his partner junior Andrew Nguyen lost to Sam Coward and Jack Reilly 7-6, (9-7), 6-4. This once again tied the match 2-2, bringing the whole thing down to one match.

The whole crowd stood at one court to watch senior Justin Batliner take on Austin Hunt. Hunt suffered an ankle injury during the second set, but he continued to play. It came down to a tie breaker. Batliner defeated Hunt, winning regionals for the Highlanders.

This is the first time this season the team has defeated the Red Devils after losing to them twice in the regular season. However, the boys pulled through when it mattered. They earned a 23rd regional title.

The team advances to semi-state and will play undefeated Jasper at Jasper on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Boys’ tennis seeks 22nd consecutive conference win

As the leaves begin to fall down from the trees, the boys’ tennis team prepares for sectionals. They posted a 19-4 record as of Sept. 27 and did it with a unique team. Having only four seniors on the team, they were counted on to lead them to where they are now. Head coach Rick Miller said they are very talented and deep in different spots.

“Our goal this year is to win our 22nd. That is, our 22nd consecutive conference championship,” said Miller.

From the beginning of the pre-season, the goal for this team was to take home the conference win and extend the streak. It has been their motto ever since, and senior Jarret Oldham agrees.

“We’ve done really well this year, we’ve beat some pretty good teams. And we’re always trying to get better. But most importantly, we want to go deeper into the tournament,” said Oldham.

Junior Lucas Corley, a first year player, said he is excited to be on the team, and he is looking forward to sectionals.

“I’m looking forward to rolling through it like it’s a yellow light and you’re speeding through it,” said Corley.

The team began their sectional run on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Miller has them prepared to his liking and he said he believes they are playing their best tennis right now. He said he always wants to be playing the best tennis at the end of the year, because that is when it counts.
