The Big Apple: live blogging from senior Jared Murray

By Jared Murray

Guest Reporter

It’s 5:05 am on Feb. 28, and we are only in Pennsylvania after sitting in traffic for two hours waiting for a wreck to be cleared. The kids in the back are laughing hysterically, attempting to recreate musical numbers from Pitch Perfect, and going slightly insane from lack of sleep and possibly considering canibalism due to severe hunger pains. The adults in the front are probably frowning at us, wishing they could put us to sleep for the rest of the trip. After that exhausting two hours of waiting for a plethora of fire trucks to put out a flaming semi, I’m ready to sleep for the rest of the ride up, but I doubt that will happen now that everyone is riled up about how close we are. And if you’re still wondering, we haven’t resorted to eating each other. . . Yet.

The Big Apple: live blogging from orchestra senior Jared Murray

By Jared Murray

Editor’s Note: For the extent of the orchestra’s trip to New York for their competition at Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Bagpiper will be having a guest live blogging straight from New York. Senior Jared Murray will be updating daily with photos and events of the Floyd Central students in New York. Image

It’s 4:40 p.m. on Feb. 27, and the Floyd Central Orchestra is finally on the road for New York City. We have packed the bus full of people, luggage, and of course,  instruments. Everyone seems to be excited despite the 12+ hour drive. So far my mom has only embarrassed me once, but some weren’t as lucky. Its only been 10 minutes and people are already on their iDevices, complaining about the bus wifi, and talking about the plans for tomorrow. I’m definitely ready to get to The Big Apple and take in the city. Only 12+ more hours!

LittleBigPlanet Vita falls short

By Patrick Prifogle

The LittleBigPlanet franchise has been evolving since the original came on back in 2008. The PSP release was nice but could have used a little more. LittleBigPlanet 2 was the real peak of the franchise and while LBP Vita does bring a lot of what LBP 2 brought to the table, this portable entry is a bit underwhelming.

The game itself looks great, in the 20 or so hours I played I didn’t see one bit of slow down or screen tearing. Sackboy looks as cute and fluffy on Vita as he does on the Playstation 3.

The gameplay is just the same as LBP 2 as well. That’s not all bad but it means that jumping is still floaty and worst of all the level editor is maddeningly complex. You need not fret though, because people adapt, I know that I don’t understand how to make a great LBP Vita level, but there is always someone who will crack the code and make amazing levels for us to enjoy.

The biggest hook LBP Vita has to offer is the fact that, through User-Generated content, LBP Vita has the potential to give Sony an answer to the App store. If people buy this game and make levels, in a month or two, this game could have over 200000 levels after all LBP 2 has over 8 million levels.

Even with the loads of levels though this game could be so much better. It’s a good game for sure but is falls short of being great, maybe next time they will finally perfect the formula.

+ Endless levels

+ Great Graphics

– Lackluster level design

– Floaty jumping

Students use creativity to show school spirit

By Michael Pepin

The hallways of FC have become a bizarre sight over the week, with students encountering anything from a full body white tiger outfit to a detailed costume of Legolas from Lord of the Rings.  This year’s spirit week has caught the attention and interest of many as the school spirit soars in preparation for the Homecoming.

“Spirit week is a great thing to have to show how much you appreciate your school,” said senior Whitney Batliner.  She said that dressing up is a great way to show school spirit and have fun at the same time.

On Monday, a dazzling array of colors confused many teachers who were not aware that it was Neon day, and on Tuesday many relieved the famous theme of the Madison Football game by wearing the nation’s colors.  For many students, this is their most memorable week of their high school year.

“I love it and wish more kids would participate.  I think it helps make memorable experiences of high school,” said librarian Pamela Poe, in a gold Star Trek outfit.  Wednesday produced the oddest blend of costumes.  The theme was movie character, but throughout the day anyone from Voldemort to Ghost Rider was seen.

“It’s pretty neat seeing all the people and how they dress up and show their school spirit” said junior Austin King.  There was certainly a lot of humor on Thursday when the theme was nerd day, and nearly every girl in sight wore pigtails and a pair of broad lenses glasses.  Some teachers even joined in on this theme, earning a laugh from many students.

“I think the purpose of spirit week is to see how many kids show school spirit and attempt to brighten other peoples days,” said King.  Even for those people who do not feel the thrill of dressing up in a ridiculous outfit for the duration of the school day, can feel the enthusiasm and thrill of seeing people they know, dressing up.

“Dressing up is a great way to show school spirit because it’s something everyone can do and even those people who don’t participate get to see all the cool costumes.   Plus it gets people ready for high school, pepping them up for the rest of the year,” said freshman Brandyn Magers.
